description

Zwillingslauser means rough house twins and this plot in the Ried Kittmannsberg vineyard was planted thirty years ago in Michael and Rudolph’s honor by their parents to celebrate their birth. The vineyard is 300 meters above sea level steeply sloped and facing south by southwest for warm days and cool night with soils consisting of primary rock (granite, quartz and mica) for more minerality than most Gruners. The juice aged in stainless steel and typical analysis is around 12.5% Alcohol, 1.6 RS and 5.8 Acidity. No shrieking violet, it has bright acidity and good minerality. This is a Gruner for dry Riesling lovers showing distinctive stone fruit while still maintaining Gruner Veltliner typicity. Sax renders intense, balanced Gruners as well as racy Rieslings and rustic Reds from prime vineyards in the middle of the Kamptal Valley’ loess rich soils. The Sax family has been making wine in the area since 1660. Rudolph Sr. and Ernestine handed over the reins to their twins sons Rudolph Jr. “Rudi” and Michael “Michi in 2008. With Rudolph in the vineyards and Michael in the winery, Sax is in very good hands. In the vineyards, biodiversity and cover crops are used instead of spraying and plowing. All the grapes are picked by hand and very gently pressed in the winery. The overall style is dry and elegant, and despite the modest prices, the single vineyard wines in particular can age very well.
