Silvio Messana with his Montesecondo winery is a revolutionary within Chianti. Montesecondo’s wines are in a class all their own, and his foundational Sangiovese is a unique treat. The Sangiovese grapes for this wine are picked earlier than his others, and he applies only a short maceration with limited punch downs. What that means is: this wine is distinctly and intentionally elegant in color, tannin, and extraction. Montesecondo’s Sangiovese is airy, light on its feet, and incredibly fresh. Floral aromatics of rose and violet dominate the palate with hints of tart red cherry. This is a true outlier in our collection, and a terrific introduction to what Montesecondo is all about. If you like this, it’s definitely worth exploring his additional Sangiovese bottlings: a Chianti Classico and his amphora aged ‘Tïn’…ALL delicious and reflective of his uniquely special winemaking.
