description

The Spinola family traces their roots in Gavi back to the 11th Century when they were leading figures in the powerful City-State of Genoa. Over the centuries, the Spinolas have served as Doges of Genoa, cardinals in the Holy Roman Empire, passengers on Colombus' voyage to America, and as some of the first missionaries to Japan. During the family's long history in Genoa, they always had vineyards and a castle in Tassarolo, a village about 40 miles north of Genoa located withing the modern Gavi DOCG. In 2006, Andrea Spinola left his job at a multi-national company in Milan, returning to his childhood roots in Tassarolo, and founded Marchese Luca Spinola. Over the past 15 years, he has worked tirelessly to grow the business and create Gavis of stunning precision and purity. The estate's Cortese vines are planted on calcareous soils and farmed organically.

Marche Luca Spinola's Conte di Tassarolo is made from 100% Cortese fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. When I first tasted the wine, I immediately fell in love with its charming aromas: white flowers, fresh picked pears, key lime, Meyer lemon and chopped Yellow Delicious apples with an underlying note of oyster shell. The palate delivers a playful elegance with featherweight body and filigree acidity that are perfectly balanced as the wine leads into an attractive, long finish with notes of lemon sherbet, crushed rocks and a whisper of peach. Simple, yet incredibly refined and refreshing. The Conte di Tassarolo is the perfect summer wine: incredible on its own as an aperitif, a partner with light, bright summer salads or a plate of chilled seafood
