Each producer herein brings something soulful and unmistakably their own. Fratelli Alessandria in Verduno gives us this wonderful northern Barolo character: fragrant, lifted, red-fruited and savory, with the kind of complexity that unfolds rather than announces. Francesco Rinaldi is another touchstone for traditional Barolo, and the ‘Brunate’ and ‘Cannubi’ bottlings offer two great Crus through a shared old school lens. Brunate shows depth and breadth; Cannubi leans toward perfume, finesse and silky Nebbiolo texture. Finally, there is Cristian Boffa, our freshest offering and, indeed, a maker who has not been offered here or nearly anywhere else, ever. His tiny production from La Morra feels particularly personal, special, and lovely.
