description
I have always, and will continue to, refer to Gramolere as the "Great Restaurant Wine" in Alessandria's stable. Indeed, a polished and lovable wine that never pushes redline, never shouts...but is there and reflects a dark fruit not present in the rest of the winery's treasures. Truly delicious...pair with a fine meal.

From the Winery: Gramolere is a cru in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, situated between Gavarini and Bussia. Its structure and character are considered synonymous with the Barolo of Monforte. Alongside these characteristics, the wine from this particular hillside expresses delicate scents of aromatic herbs that blend with classic and complex notes of leather and liquorice.

The 2018 Gramolere has a slightly richer and sweeter profile that speaks to its Monforte d’Alba origins. High-toned red fruits such as wild raspberry and cherry peel back to reveal hypnotic layers of Chinese tea, dark bramble fruit, balsamic and seared meat. On the palate, the fruit is voluptuous and delicately spiced, cradled by the enveloping structure and cleansing acidity. There is a mouth-watering minerality here too that just completes everything. -Goedhuis

  • The 2018 Barolo Gramolere is the most engaging of the 2018 Barolos here. It shows a level of translucence that is missing from the other wines, most likely because of recent racking. Dark spice, menthol, plum and gravel lend quite a bit of nuance to this ample, expansive Barolo. The 2018 is beautifully done and also quite promising. Drinking window: 2024-2043. -Antonio Galloni

  • Monforte d'Alba. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Deep, brooding and meaty on the nose. Deep cherry palate that is still taut and framed by sweet clayey tannins. Very long, mouth-filling and finely balanced while maintaining elegance. -Jancis Robinson
