‘THE SIX PACK’ Jim Krueger’s Selection
‘THE SIX PACK’ Jim Krueger’s Selection
When winter rolls in and the temperature cools, I crave wine from warmer climates. Rich and full-bodied reds pair well with hearty winter fare. In my final selection, I *also* noticed: these are each from underrepresented regions and varietals. Bottoms up! - JWK

Chateau d’Oupia Minervois The Languedoc, like the Southern Rhône but with enhanced earthiness, darker fruit, and a pronounced black pepper note…Château D’Oupia is a Louis/Dressner mainstay. The carbonic Carignan brings bright red fruit while the Syrah shines through proper depth. YUM.
Château Combel-La-Serre “Le Pur Fruit du Classe” Cahors A wine that has been a Shop mainstay for years now. Located in Cahors, the birthplace of Malbec, this wine is the perfect introduction to the French style of this grape. Organic estate converting to biodynamics, enjoy notes of blue fruit and tobacco that are light and restrained compared to its South American counterpart but deeply satisfying as expected.
Mas Mudigilza “Carmine” Côtes du Rousillon Mas Mudigliza is a new winery for us, and is brought to us from one of our new favorite importers, Thomas Calder. The wine is incredibly balanced with soft yet round blue fruit, a touch of tannin, and notes of menthol, coffee, and mushrooms. Complex and delicious.
Masseria Li Veli “Passamante” Salice Salentino The winery is a staple of both the region it inhabits and on our shelf. This Puglian Salice Salentino, which is 100% Negroamaro is stunning. Blackberry, blueberry, and a little baking spice come from its short maturation in French barrique. “Passamante” is ripe and full bodied but not overpowering, there’s a reason you can always find it on our shelf.
Sallier de la Tour Nero d’Avola Though the Sicilian wine renaissance has been driven by Etna Rosso and Frappato, Nero d’Avola occupies a similar keystone in Sicily’s history and future. This is a delicious wine with notes of red and black fruit, ripe tannin gives the wine good structure, and the 12 months in oak deepens its character.
Vinos Aurelio Garcia “Mikaela” Ribeira del Jucar Micaela Rubio is on a mission to raise the reputation of Spain’s third most planted grape, Bobal. The varietal, which conventional wisdom will tell you is a simple thick-skinned blending grape, has incredibly potential. The wine is medium bodied, floral, with notes of red and black cherry and a little green herbaceous layer on top. An absolute gem to round out our warm climate six pack.
