Collection: Piedmont

Located in Italy's northwest corner, Piedmont experiences moderate and continental climates subject to long, cold winters and thunderstorms, hail, and fog in the summer. The notable foothills provide different aspects and altitudes for growing the major red grape varietals of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and white grapes of Cortese and Moscato.

Some of the most well-known wines from Piemonte are the high acid, high tannin Nebbiolo of Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG. The black grape ripens very slowly when grown at higher altitudes, and the best vintages result in full-bodied wines with incredible age-ability. The smaller region of Barbaresco sits at a slightly lower altitude and produces wine of similar style often coming from a single vineyard.

Alternately, Barbera and Dolcetto are planted throughout Alba and Asti. Barbera tends to ripen later in the growing season and can make wines that are young and fruit-forward in style, or aged in barrels to create spice in depth of flavor. Dolcetto ripens early and thrives in cooler sites, can also be consumed young but can be aged for several years.

White grapes of Piedmont are not to be overlooked! The altitude of the hills in Gavi where Cortese grows allows for slow ripening due to the sea breezes. What results is a light bodied white wine with naturally high acid and floral aromas. Asti is most famous for its sparkling wines made of Moscato, which can range from dry to sweet.
