A LITTLE ABOUT
the wise old dog
At The Wise Old Dog, we love to drink great wine. And, even more so, we love it in the company of great people. We believe wine is meant to be discovered and shared, and most importantly, loved without pretension.
LETTER from JACOB
The Wise Old Dog is modeled after all of the mom and pop stores I frequented with my own mother growing up on the North Shore of Long Island in the 1980s. We went, of course, to the supermarket, too, for big basic items like salt and paper towel and breakfast cereal…but: Makinajian Farm for chicken, Jeff’s Seafood for fish, Mr. Sausage for Italian specialties and fresh made mozzarella and homemade pasta. Chocolate at Halloween and Christmas strictly from Bon Bon’s Chocolatier and deli meat and groceries from Southdown Market, fruit from across the street there at Happy Farms, and, of course, beef and pork from RS Meats.
Here’s what’s crazy: every single one of these businesses are still there a quick drive or leisurely walk from my childhood home on Fairview Street, where my mom still lives. Now, this was 40 years ago, so the handsome middle-aged man, Sal, behind the butcher counter is now in his late 80s…wouldn’t you know, though, that when I go in, to this day, to get my mother hand cut steaks for the grill, he still makes everyone else stand politely and wait in line while he slices me a single slice of Bologna...

Now, this was 40 years ago, so the handsome middle-aged man, Sal, behind the butcher counter is now in his late 80s…wouldn’t you know, though, that when I go in, to this day, to get my mother hand cut steaks for the grill, he still makes everyone else stand politely and wait in line while he slices me a single slice of Bologna as he has been doing since I was three years old.
These businesses make me feel safe, and nourished, and home. And, growing up, it’s interesting to confess that while the service and quality at these small storefronts was, in all ways, better than any large national chain store, the main reason we went there was not to be fancy…indeed, growing up more modestly than my family lives now, the packages we purchased were not only better in “quality” but better in pricing and value. Some of that value was derived from careful curation and selection, some from the advice of the merchant as to how much to buy, and sometimes just because in all of the various and innumerable ways, an unquantifiably higher level of care had been attended to each step of the Shop and its goods yielding a more valuable and thus more value-driven experience.
In 2011, I decided to open up my own mom and pop store in my new hometown of West Hartford Connecticut. And, here, on our new website, I have been asked to share digitally with clients, many of whom I will never come to know personally, what our Shop(s) are all about. Well, it’s this, really: I and my Family and our Team care more for you than you will ever know…we welcome and look forward to your questions, we work tirelessly to ‘make it nice’ when you walk in our stores, or log on to your laptop.
If we take best care of you, cherish it and know that you can come back to us and we’ll do it again and again. I hope to be like Sal the butcher someday…but, if you lose your taste for Bologna, just tell me…I’ll get you a taste of whatever you like.
All best, always,
the teams CURRENT FAVES
We value organically grown real wine from farmers. We typically favor freshness, mineral and acid-driven wines that pair effortlessly with equally delicious food but do not necessarily *steal the show*...we think of wine, often, like we think of salt: a presumed delicious essential component to any meal. Here’s what we’re up to lately and drinking right now.

THE STORY OF
the wise old dog
-
2011
It all started with...
Jacob takes a look at Duncan, his Boston Terrier at his feet at the law firm on a Saturday morning and decides that private client law and litigation is not for him, what’s next? Open a wine shop named after his beloved Dog.
-
2012
Jacob and Allie purchase South Quaker Wine & Spirits on the grounds of the Original 1970s Grog Shop, an institution of a classic New England Package Store (and also the original location of the Quaker Lane Pharmacy which purportedly had a lovely soda counter back in the 1950s!).
-
2012
Allie and Jacob complete a cosmetic renovation of the existing space with fresh paint, handbuilt wooden wine racks, and boutique items. The Wise Old Dog and our classic logo are registered as Federal Trademarks. We start using the light-hearted ‘liquid courage & provisions’ as a tag line.
-
2014
Jacob meets Thomas. The rest is history. Also, Jacob and Allie travel to visit Al Young at Four Roses Distillery in Kentucky and purchase three private-selection barrels of Straight Bourbon including the legendary and first ‘Duncan’s Barrel’ and ‘Duncan’s Secret Barrel’ (with a yield of only 30 net bottles!). At the release of these first barrels, our Team raises a glass to ‘absent friends’ as Duncan passed away shortly prior to this special day.
-
2015
Thomas assumes the role of General Manager.
-
2016
We sign the lease on our larger space and prepare to design and build out our new Shop in West Hartford in the original gourmet grocer space, Smither’s Food Town.
-
2017
The Team opens the space next door at 612 South Quaker Lane with a significantly expanded selection, temperature controlled wine cellar, education space, and original (restored) pressed tin ceiling.
-
2020
Reluctantly, we lock our doors for fear of pandemic and pivot to online-only shopping with free Hartford County next-day delivery and no minimum purchasing requirement.
-
2020
A quiet reopening for in-store mindful browsing.
-
2021
Real Estate closing on the purchase of Paper Moon Farm, a 19th Century New England farmhouse in Litchfield County, hamlet of East Morris and our intended location of a wholly new shopping experience in New England. The Wise Old Dog South Farms breaks ground right away on a to-the-studs-restoration of this old house in preparation for reopening as a boutique with custom galleries and the most serious retail wine cellar in Connecticut.
-
2022
Grand Opening of our Morris Shop replete with a week full of pop-up farm suppers, international guests, chefs, rare wines from the Cellar, and lots of friendly faces.
-
2022
First annual Fête du Vin in Morris.
