Details

This family has been making Barolo continuously for more than 100 years. Experience combined with a fresh approach introduced by Vittore (in charge of vinification since 2001) that defies being defined as either traditional or modern, has brought this estate to the highest level in Barolo. The vineyards of Verduno are predisposed toward elegant, “Burgundian” styled Barolo, and the meticulous low yield farming they employ adds a hint of power to the natural finesse. They are simply stunning across the board; power, complexity, elegance and value, yes you can have them all. Their Pelaverga is a benchmark for the tiny DOC and all of the wines are exceptionally well made. From Antonio Galloni in the Wine Advocate 10-2009 "This is another set of compelling wines from Fratelli Alessandria. In fact, I can’t think of another producer making Barolos at this level that still sell for such reasonable prices." ; 12-23-10 "This is a knock out set of new releases from Fratelli Alessandria, one of Piemonte's up and coming producers." Thank you Antonio!, But even as we realize that Piemonte is a slow moving and rather conservative place, these wines have been simply spectacular since the 1995 vintage, and I move that they be moved from "up and coming" to "well established star" status.

Gramolere is a cru in Monforte d'Alba located between Gavarini and Bussia. Our vineyard has got South exposure, is at an altitude of 400 meters and is a over 40 year old. A big structure and character are the features of the Barolo from Monforte. The wine from Gramolere hill is characterized by delicate notes of herbs that melt into the typical complex scents of leather and liquorice.

Some Press on Recent Vintages:
“The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is a powerful, tightly wound wine full of Monforte tension. Readers will have to be patient. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and sage add layers of aromatic intrigue to this firm, hulky Barolo. The 2017 takes all the Gramolere signatures and turns up the volume.” - 95 Points Monica Larner Wine Advocate, June 2021

“Vittore Alessandria's 2017 Barolos are among the finest wines of the vintage. Consistency is always a hallmark of top estates, and that is exactly what readers will find here. Alessandria's 2017s are deep, fleshy and full of character. The 2017s spent 30-35 days on the skins, with extended maceration in which the cap is floating, but not totally submerged. The malolactic fermentation was in steel, after which the wines were racked into cask and then bottled with 34 months in oak. "The challenge was keeping temperatures low in fermentation to help extend the ferments and retain as much freshness as possible," Alessandria told me. "Excess drought was more of an issue than the heat. Harvest was about 25 days ahead of 2016. Analytically, the 2017s are similar to the 2015s.". - 94 Points Antonio Galloni, February 2021

The 2018 Gramolere has a slightly richer and sweeter profile that speaks to its Monforte d’Alba origins. High-toned red fruits such as wild raspberry and cherry peel back to reveal hypnotic layers of Chinese tea, dark bramble fruit, balsamic and seared meat. On the palate, the fruit is voluptuous and delicately spiced, cradled by the enveloping structure and cleansing acidity. There is a mouth-watering minerality here too that just completes everything. -Goedhuis
The 2018 Barolo Gramolere is the most engaging of the 2018 Barolos here. It shows a level of translucence that is missing from the other wines, most likely because of recent racking. Dark spice, menthol, plum and gravel lend quite a bit of nuance to this ample, expansive Barolo. The 2018 is beautifully done and also quite promising. Drinking window: 2024-2043. -Antonio Galloni

Monforte d'Alba. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Deep, brooding and meaty on the nose. Deep cherry palate that is still taut and framed by sweet clayey tannins. Very long, mouth-filling and finely balanced while maintaining elegance. -Jancis Robinson

Monica Lerner Wine Advocate 96 Points The 2019 Barolo Gramolere (with 7,000 bottles made) shows a slightly sweeter and riper fruit profile. This wine comes from the village of Monforte d'Alba, which is known for more structured and powerful wines compared to Verduno (where this winery is based), which offers lighter, more floral wines instead. Gramolere shows dark fruit, plum and spice, but it also has a pretty mineral note of rust or iron. However, within this portfolio, this wine may well deliver the longest drinking window.
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points More concentation of fruit can be found in the 2019 Barolo Gramolere. with raspberry liqueur, spice box, and licorice. It is medium bodied but has a more expanded feel. with notes of dried apricot, grenadine, blood orange, and tobacco. Drink 2025-2045.
