Tenuta Tenaglia Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC, 2020

Tenuta Tenaglia Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC, 2020

Regular price $20.00

This wine is made of 100% Grignolino. Grignolino is a light and fragrant red grape, and much like Nebbiolo, has grippy tannins and light fruit. We would pair it with Cotechino and lentils, a Northern Italian sausage dish laid on a bed of hearty lentils. Tenuta Tenaglia focuses on small production and aims to highlight the wines of the Piedmontese Monferrato hills.

Details

From the winery: According to the legend of the Marquis Aleramo, also romantically portrayed by the poet and writer Giosuè Carducci, the Monferrato area took on its first connotation around the middle of the tenth century, comprising a vast portion of territory between the Gavi area to the south, close to the Apennines, and the last hills around Casale Monferrato to the north, which gently slope down towards the Po river.

Historically, this little gem of Piedmont has stood out for the excellence of its wines and sparkling wines, for the charm of its villages and castles, for its sophisticated gastronomy and for a surprisingly authentic territory thanks to its limited human presence.

In 2003, the first UNESCO recognition arrived: the Sacro Monte di Crea was included in the List of World Heritage Sites and it will not remain the only one for long. In 2014, the same universal value was also recognized for the ancient local cellars dug into the stone by cantoni – the “Infernot” – as well as for the Monferrato wine-growing landscape.

Tenuta Tenaglia is immersed in this colorful scenery, at the foot of the Sacro Monte, in the municipality of Serralunga di Crea, at an altitude of 450 m above sea level, surrounded by a suggestive amphitheater described by vineyards dating back to the seventeenth century.

A unique product so rare that people often say: Tenaglia grapes ripen above the clouds.

Indeed, during the winter months, the Sacred Mount of Crea remains suspended between the fog and the clouds, in a mystical and surreal scenario.

Built around the beginning of the seventeenth century at the foot of the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Madonna di Crea, the Estate takes its name from the Governor of Moncalvo, Giorgio Tenaglia. A man of great courage and captain of fortune, he led great battles against the Spanish invaders. During his moments of rest, Giorgio retreated to the estate, where he produced wine, raised his horses and cultivated his cultural and artistic passions by patronizing local artists for the creation of some of the twenty-three chapels in the Sanctuary of Crea above.

Over the centuries, what was once the property of Giorgio Tenaglia, who had no heirs, passed from hand to hand: the vineyards were administered by the Church for a long time and cultivated by the nuns of the Dominican Monastery of Maria di Magdala in the Crea complex, after which, from the early decades of the twentieth century, several private owners followed one another.

In the year 2000, Hannelore Ehrmann, wife of German entrepreneur Alois Ehrmann, fell in love with the estate and together they decided to make an investment and realize a lifelong dream: to produce wine in Italy.

Today Tenuta Tenaglia is managed by the Italian-German Ehrmann family, the owner Sabine together with her children and her team, take care with great attention and passion of the production and distribution of their wines in Italy and abroad.
