Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

100% Nebbiolo, from vines between 15 and 65 years old, grown in vineyards surrounding a small chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The vineyards are south, east, and west facing, forming a small amphitheater where slow, controlled ripening occurs in the cooler and high altitude Monforte d'Alba. The terroir and conditions pave the way for outstanding phenolic ripeness in this wine, marked by finely grained tannins and extremely luscious and gentle aromas of violets, raspberry jam, and thyme. The wine is vinified by cold maceration, a 2-week fermentation, followed by a 3-week submerged cap maceration, all further contributing to this Nebbiolo's finesse and elegance. 12 months of aging in barrel finish off the winemaking for this treat of a bottle. Slow it down and pair with a standing rib roast, cooked to perfection with some fresh rosemary and thyme, along with garlic and horseradish mashed potatoes, and grilled leeks.
