Costa Arènte Valpolicella Ripasso Valpantena Superiore, 2022

Regular price $28.00

This wine is made from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella. The grapes are grown on hillside terraces extending up to 600 meters above sea level, consisting of acidic clay-loam soils. After a short maceration on its skins, the wine is passed onto stainless steel and French Oak barrels. Then, after three months settling in bottle, it comes to market. It has a fresh and fruity bouquet of cherry, blackberry, and black pepper, and light bodied on the palate with smooth soft tannins. Pair it with a rigatoni bolognese or OG Kristal gouda.

From our distributor:
At Costa Arente, the Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinalla grapes are grown using the traditional Pergola Veronese training system. They are harvested by hand between the end of September and the beginning of October, then placed on plastic trays to dry for a minimum period of 100 days in a large, thermo-conditioned room to ensure the right aeration, temperature and humidity. The process is called ‘appassimento’. At the end of this process, 3 to 4 months later, the grapes are partially shriveled, having lost 30% to 35% of their weight and their juice, and ready for vinification.

Symbol of the Valpolicella region, Amarone is among the most iconic red wines of Italy. Amarone is the result of a distinctive production method called ‘appassimento‘ (‘drying’) in which the dried grapes acquire greater concentration and favor the development of a rich, intense aromatic profile. The resulting wine is then fermented until it’s dry (for the sweet Recioto della Valpolicella the fermentation is stopped so that the natural sweetness remains in the wine). Amarone is a rich, heady, robust wine with 14 to 16 percent alcohol, that needs about ten years to mature and can age for 15 to 20 years or more.

Costa Arente is a stunning 86-acre estate (35 ha) with 42 acres (17 ha) of vineyard in the Valpantena valley near Verona.

Aquired in 2015, the estate is located in the municipality of Grezzana at an altitude of between 820 and 1150 ft asl, on loamy calcareous soils. Located at the top of a hill (‘costa’ means ‘hill’ or ‘crest’ in Veronese dialect) and surrounded by vineyards on three sides, the exposure of Costa Arènte is particularly favorable for the production of healthy grapes, able to withstand the drying process necessary to create Amarone, the region’s symbol.

The winery has undergone a major transformation and Giovanni Casati, experienced agronomist and dedicated oenologist, has set up residence at Costa Arente to oversee the transformation first-hand. Riccardo Cotarella, Genagricola consultant oenologist, has made this ambition his own, providing his personal contribution with passion and enthusiasm, collaborating with his team alongside Casati in definition of the final form of the products.
