Manuele Priolo's first release, the 2021 vintage, debuted last fall and was one of Piedmont's most anticipated releases of the year. We were Manuele's first importer in any country, thanks to an early introduction from Renato Vezza of Bricco Ernesto.
When not assisting others as a consulting oenologist, Manuele farms his family's land. Vigneto Eroico (heroic vineyard), within MGA Anime Nere, is a dangerously steep hillside in Monteu Roero, where the terraces rise dramatically above literal cliffs that plunge into the Rocche—a striking natural rock formation often referred to as Roero's Grand Canyon, carved by the ancient path of the Tanaro River.
Manuele cultivates a rare, nearly extinct clone of Nebbiolo that is being studied by renowned European ampelographer Anna Schneider. Believed to be indigenous to Roero, this clone shows exceptional drought resistance—a key trait in Roero’s drier climate compared to Langhe—while achieving full phenolic ripeness at low alcohol levels. Manuele often harvests two weeks later than others in the region, yet his wines remain around 13.5% ABV, showing extreme elegance amid fully ripe tannins.
In terms of farming, Manuele is as true a vigneron as we have ever seen. He works as strictly natural as other top tier growers of his generation, noting through experience, that the better you farm, the more loudly the land speaks in the finished wine. The wild look of his vineyard is not only for promoting biodiversity - ample cover crop serves to prevent erosion of the terraces.
