This is the cellar-stuffer. If you're going to lay some Barolo into the gas tank to have on hand and crush with a nice steak, or at the end of a long week, this is IT. Indeed, in recent memory at a tasting with Shop friends/clients and winemaker Vittore Alessandria, while we had open some truly fabulous wines stretching back into the '90s, the showstopper of the evening, for me and others, was a 2006 bottling of this wine, Alessandria's more minor expression...absolutely delicious and age-worthy!

This family has been making Barolo continuously for more than 100 years. Experience combined with a fresh approach introduced by Vittore (in charge of vinification since 2001) that defies being defined as either traditional or modern, has brought this estate to the highest level in Barolo. The vineyards of Verduno are predisposed toward elegant, “Burgundian” styled Barolo, and the meticulous low yield farming they employ adds a hint of power to the natural finesse. They are simply stunning across the board; power, complexity, elegance and value, yes you can have them all. Their Pelaverga is a benchmark for the tiny DOC and all of the wines are exceptionally well made. From Antonio Galloni in the Wine Advocate 10-2009 "This is another set of compelling wines from Fratelli Alessandria. In fact, I can’t think of another producer making Barolos at this level that still sell for such reasonable prices." ; 12-23-10 "This is a knock out set of new releases from Fratelli Alessandria, one of Piemonte's up and coming producers." Thank you Antonio!, But even as we realize that Piemonte is a slow moving and rather conservative place, these wines have been simply spectacular since the 1995 vintage, and I move that they be moved from "up and coming" to "well established star" status.
Gramolere is a cru in Monforte d'Alba located between Gavarini and Bussia. Our vineyard has got South exposure, is at an altitude of 400 meters and is a over 40 year old. A big structure and character are the features of the Barolo from Monforte. The wine from Gramolere hill is characterized by delicate notes of herbs that melt into the typical complex scents of leather and liquorice.

Some Press on Recent Vintages:
“The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is an absolutely gorgeous wine. This is the first vintage in which the Barolo 'classico' becomes a Barolo del Comune di Verduno, in other words, a wine only from Verduno. Pliant and deep, the 2017 is striking right out of the gate. A wine of tremendous balance, the 2017 is a total pleasure to taste. Today the flavors are naturally quite primary, but there is so much to like. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange and spice punctuate the finish. Vineyard sites are Rivarocca, plus smaller pieces from Pisapola, Campasso, Rocche dell'Olmo and Boscato..” 92 Points, Antonio Galloni, Feb 2021; 94 Points, Monica Larner Wine Advocate

“Vittore Alessandria's 2017 Barolos are among the finest wines of the vintage. Consistency is always a hallmark of top estates, and that is exactly what readers will find here. Alessandria's 2017s are deep, fleshy and full of character. The 2017s spent 30-35 days on the skins, with extended maceration in which the cap is floating, but not totally submerged. The malolactic fermentation was in steel, after which the wines were racked into cask and then bottled with 34 months in oak. "The challenge was keeping temperatures low in fermentation to help extend the ferments and retain as much freshness as possible," Alessandria told me. "Excess drought was more of an issue than the heat. Harvest was about 25 days ahead of 2016. Analytically, the 2017s are similar to the 2015s.". -Antonio Galloni, February 2021
A beautiful representation of the village of Verduno that displays a supremely sexy nose! Juicy blood orange, pomegranate and dark red cherry mingle with fresh rose and mineral notes. The gentle roll of ripe, silky fruit tannins that unfurl on the palate are matched by a lively freshness and support the weight of the detailed, juicy fruit. Impeccable balance. -Goedhuis
The 2018 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is aromatic, delicate and super-expressive. Bright red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal, lavender, spice and dried herbs open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 offers a lovey combination of fruitiness and mid-weight Verduno structure. -Antonio Galloni

Youthful mid ruby. Lifted, fresh cherry fruit with dark earth notes and a fine layer of spice. Very elegant and fine on the palate, almost ephemeral. Notes of amarena cherry with fine, long bitter-sweet powdery tannins. Super-elegant and pretty and ready now. Highly recommended for those seeking elegance over power. -Jancis Robinson

95 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Fragrant and refined, Fratelli Alessandria’s 2019 Barolo del Comune di Verduno opens with enticing scents recalling dog rose, perfumed forest berry, cedar and eucalyptus. Lithe and elegantly structured, the savory palate reveals juicy red cherry, spiced cranberry and star anise accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins. It’s well balanced, with fresh acidity. Drink: 2024–2034. (Mar 2023)"

92 points Audrey Frick (jebdunnuck.com): "There is expansive perfume of anise, raspberry liqueur, rose petal, and chalky earth in the glass of the 2019 Barolo Del Comune Di Verduno. It is medium-bodied, with a persistent linear structure and fresh-driven citrus of orange peel, tea leaf, and cranberry. Allow another year and drink 2025-2035. Drink: 2025-2035. (5/4/23)"
