And, at last, here we are: the topic of Super Tuscans is highly contentious! And, I certainly have my opinions, but I’m going to try and let journalistic integrity prevail. Super Tuscans came about for two main reasons: First, the coast of Tuscany, specifically the towns of Bolgheri and Maremma were a wild west of Tuscan wine. A lack of DOC’s or any regulations meant wine makers could experiment with whatever they desired. Secondly, commercialization and a thing called Parkerization’ (a term you should Google at your own risk) meant Bordeaux Blends were particularly en vogue in the 70s and 80s. Combine that with the tattered reputation of Chianti at the time and you get a region that sought a way to thrive making Cabernet and Merlot driven wines. But, the state of affairs isn’t always so black and white and around every cloud... Thus, Cabernet is now a deliciously inseparable part of Tuscan winemaking culture.  And, the Pellegrini family is an important part of this.  While the Pellegrinis once strictly sold grapes grown at their Aia Vecchia (Old Farmhouse) estate to local wineries, they were encouraged by their longtime church friend to produce wine under their own label. Their old friend happens to be our new friend, Hungarian winemaking legend Tibor Gál. Aia Vecchia got to work and under the supervision of Gál and transformed Aia Vecchia into a formidable estate. ‘Lagone’ is a beloved bottling. With grapes sourced from both Maremma and Bolgheri, ‘Lagone’ is the perfect *Super Tuscan* for you to check out.
