Details

From our importer: "Their vineyards, all in Serralunga, are among the most celebrated in Barolo, with the Gabutti cru standing out for its force, ageworthiness and aromatic richness.”
- Gambero Rosso on the subject of Podere Gabutti.

The Margheria vineyard covers 0.4 ha. The excellent exposure to the west, the favorable microclimate, the well-suited soil type and the young age of the vines all contribute to obtaining excellent quality grapes. The grapes are hand-picked in mid-October, placed in perforated baskets for their transport to the cellar.

The fermentation takes place in steel tanks at 28°C with frequent daily pumping over for 12-15 days. The tumultuous fermentation is followed by submerged-cap fermentation for 15 days in order to completely extract the tannins and aromas. The wine is placed in new, 20-hectolitre oak barrels, where it remains for 3 years. The wine is never filtered, and is left to further age in the bottle.

We are extremely pleased to add a Serralunga producer to our book, to add two more crus to our ever-growing collection of Barolo and to add more 2016 Barolo at such incredible prices. The soils of Serralunga have produced distinctive wines for 2500 years. The most calcareous, and comprised of the finest silt in all of Barolo, this unique terroir naturally inspires and excites the senses. Our obsession with Barolo, our need to represent as many communes as possible, and collect crus and acquire wine, drove us to knock on the door of Podere Gabutti in 2017, and begin the courting process with its owner and winemaker, Franco Boasso.

Franco Boasso has farmed and vinified 50 vintages on the Gabutti hill. His blocks on Gabutti sit immediately above Capellano, and share the same aspect and orientation. That said, these wines are quite different. Some of you may remember the wines of Luigi Baudana before the winery sold to GD Vajra, back when Luigi was making just a few hundred cases of wine in his cellar; indeed, the 2001 and 2004 Baudana vintages stir me to this day… the wines of Franco Boasso are that same, old fashioned Barolo. Power and elegance, flavor and color are on tap…and they are wholly and unmistakably BAROLO, but, there is a sincerity, an authenticity and a soulfulness that pivots us away from the polished pristine wines of today and, instead, harkens back to the Barolos of the 1950s and 1960s. Perhaps, then, this is the least expensive and most delicious time travel I’ve witnessed in a very long time. I am proud to import these wines and offer them to you. I hope you indulge and explore with some bottles for the table, and a box or two for the Cellar.
