From the Winery: Cougar Rock Vineyard was the site for our inaugural wines in 2011, with the name stemming from the first sight of the craggy rock feature at the highest point of the estate by Piero Antinori in 1966. Nestled from 1450 to 1800 feet above sea level, the vineyard lies due east of Yountville, high up in the Vaca Mountain Range of the eastern hills in Napa Valley. Within the range rests Foss Valley – the original throughway from the coast to the Sacramento Valley for the early settlers in California. In the heart of Foss Valley, the 1200-acre estate encompasses the furthest eastward portion of the Atlas Peak AVA in Napa Valley.

The 2013 vintage was even, early and excellent. A dry, warm summer brought early bud break, while fruit set was under nearly perfect sunny skies. One heat spike had very little impact during a very warm and consistent growing season. An early harvest coupled with cooler sunny weather led to prolonged hang time, adding further depth and concentration.

Our winemaker strives to allow the site to shine in every wine he produces. All lots of Pinot Noir undergo an extended cold soak until native yeast begin a sponatenous fermentation in open-top barrels where the grapes are punchdown by hand. At 55 degrees Fahrenheit in natural caves dug deep into the hills in Napa Valley, our small lot fermentations, a portion being whole-cluster, take upwards of a month before a light pressing to barrel for their extended aging. Racked once, our Pinot Noir remains in 100% once-used French oak barrels for eighteen months and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The aromatics display purity and precision, with alluring dark red fruits framed by dusty red earth and dried herbs. The palate is supple, rich and structured, with a vibrant acidity and elegant finish.
