Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

*This is our Annual Barolo Direct Import Offer*
The Cantina del Pino 2022 Barbaresco Albesani is a powerful and beautifully saturated expression of one of Neive's celebrated MGA sites, bringing together dark fruit, spice and the depth that makes Albesani such a compelling source for Nebbiolo. The fruit comes from south-facing vineyards at 250 meters in elevation, planted on the famed Sant'Agata Fossil Marls, a terroir particularly well suited to producing wines of richness, concentration and presence. With only 3,000 bottles produced, this is a limited-production Barbaresco that deserves serious consideration for the cellar, particularly for those who enjoy Nebbiolo with more weight and power.
The wine opens with spicy, toasted notes that merge into dark fruit, blackcurrant and a hint of sweet baking spice. On the palate, there is impressive power and an intense, saturated feel, with fruit that wraps across the palate carrying considerable concentration. Beneath that generosity is the classic Nebbiolo structure that keeps the wine balanced and focused, making this a particularly satisfying expression of the dry 2022 vintage.
This is a Barbaresco built for the table and for hearty food. The combination of dark fruit, spice, concentration and substantial palate presence makes it a natural partner for grilled or roasted beef, braised meats, game, rich mushroom dishes and handmade pasta with deeply flavored sauces.
The 'Albesani' Vineyard itself is a major part of our love for this wine. Albesani sits in Neive on the famed Sant'Agata Fossil Marls and Franca Vacca of Cantina del Pino gives the wine a patient élevage of 24 months in a 20-hectoliter cask followed by another 18 months in bottle, allowing the considerable fruit and structure to settle into place. The wine presents now with clear lines and the depth and concentration make a compelling case for its place in the cellar with a drinking window for many many years to come.
With just 3,000 bottles produced, the 2022 Albesani is a very limited-production, deeply flavored Barbaresco for the Cellar and the Table...do not miss it!
