Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

*This is our Annual Barolo Direct Import Offer*
A distinctive and limited-production expression of this celebrated Barbaresco vineyard, offering a graceful, almost Burgundian sensibility within the classic framework of Nebbiolo. Forest floor, cedar, leather and sun-warmed hay aromas waft from the glass, immediately giving the wine an intriguing sense of place even in its youth. This is a particularly special bottling from Cantina del Pino, with production averaging only 1,800 to 2,000 bottles, making it a wine to seek out for the cellar and to reserve for the table when something truly distinctive is called for.
The palate shows a unique combination of finesse and structure, with raspberry compote, cherry tart, vanilla and licorice unfolding over a backbone of velvety tannins. The fruit is generous without being heavy, while the savory and earthy notes add complexity and keep the wine moving gracefully across the palate. There is a lovely balance between the darker, more developed aromatic character and the freshness of the fruit, giving the wine both immediate appeal and plenty to discover with time. The 2022 dry vintage has produced a Barbaresco with real presence and concentration, and the overall impression remains elegant, refined and beautifully composed.
This is the sort of Barbaresco that can elevate a meal simply by being on the table. Its combination of red fruit, earth, cedar, leather and velvety tannin makes it a wonderful partner for roast meats, veal, mushrooms, handmade pasta, game and beautifully prepared beef. There is an almost Burgundian sensibility to the wine's texture and aromatic development, giving it an intimacy and elegance that reward a slower pace at the table. It is delicious now, but there is ample structure and depth to make opening a bottle many years very special.
Cantina del Pino's approach allows the vineyard character to remain at the forefront, with the wine's savory perfume and refined structure giving it a personality all its own. This is not simply another Barbaresco to have on hand, but, instead, a distinctive vineyard expression with the combination of perfume, fruit, tannin and earth that makes Nebbiolo so endlessly fascinating, and its small production means that opportunities to replace it once it is gone will be few.
The 2022 is a lovely bottle to enjoy now, especially with food, while the velvety tannins and underlying structure suggest that patience will be rewarded. With only 1,800 to 2,000 bottles produced on average, this is exactly the kind of limited-production Barbaresco worth buying when you encounter it. Elegant, savory, finely structured and beautifully aromatic, the Gallina has the rare ability to feel both thoroughly Piedmontese and distinctly Burgundian in spirit, making it a wonderful addition to both the cellar and the table.
