From our Distributor:
This 100% Falanghina comes from hillside vineyards at 200–300 meters on limestone and clay soils around Torrecuso, harvested by hand at the end of September. Vinified with a gentle pressing and cool fermentation in stainless steel, the wine rests four months in tank before bottling to preserve its vivid aromatics. It shows a pale straw-yellow color and an expressive bouquet of white flowers, citrus, and orchard fruit, while the palate is fresh, mineral, and saline, carried by lively acidity. Importantly, Iorio works with the inland Falanghina Beneventana clone, distinctive to the Benevento and Taburno area, which produces a rounder, fruit-driven style with generous aromatics and balanced acidity — quite different from the racier, coastal Flegrea biotype. The result is a Falanghina that captures the generosity of Sannio’s limestone-clay slopes while remaining crisp and precise. Cantine Iorio is a fourth-generation family estate in Torrecuso, at the foot of Monte Taburno in Campania’s Sannio district, long known for its volcanic soils and limestone-clay slopes. Today it is led by brothers Pietro and Luca Iorio, who continue the family’s legacy with a mix of tradition and modernity. A new winery built in 2013 gave them the tools to modernize vinification while staying true to their regional roots. Their focus is on the two great native grapes of the area: Falanghina, which thrives on the cooler hillside plots, and Aglianico, drawn from vineyards at 250–350 meters where clay-limestone marls give depth and freshness. The style emphasizes clean fruit and site transparency, with whites fermented at low temperature in stainless steel and reds vinified to balance purity, spice, and structure. From this range, we import three core wines that capture the heart of the estate: the bright, citrus-driven Beneventano Falanghina IGP; the dark-fruited, supple Beneventano Aglianico IGP; and the more structured, terroir-driven Aglianico del Sannio DOP. Together they present a clear picture of Taburno’s volcanic character—fresh, mineral whites and vibrant, spicy reds—at excellent value, making them versatile options for both by-the-glass programs and thoughtful placements on Italian-focused lists.
