Château d'Oupia 'Les Hérétiques' Pays d'Hérault, 2023

Regular price $13.00

100% Carignan, this wine is a tribute to the late André Iché, a visionary who helped shape the future of winemaking in the Languedoc region. André was a pioneer, breaking away from the traditional co-op model and embracing quality over quantity. The Carignan vines here are a blend of heritage clones, with an average age of 40 years and some vines reaching over 100 years. The whole-cluster Carignan undergoes a carbonic maceration in tank, a technique that brings out the wine's vibrancy and purity. A deep, ruby color that glistens in the glass, reflecting its youth and vitality, the bouquet is wild and expressive, with aromas of brambly raspberry, ripe dark cherry, and earthy undertones. On the palate, this wine is fresh and clean. It strikes a perfect balance between being neither too heavy nor too light, showcasing juicy acidity and a soft, approachable mouthfeel. The flavors are intense yet not overwhelming, with wild raspberry and dark cherry taking center stage. The earthiness adds complexity, while the low tannin ensures smooth drinking. The finish is bright, refreshing, and satisfying, leaving a lingering sense of purity and natural elegance. Pair with conversation and a burger off the grill...or something lighter if you tuck the bottle in the icebox for a light chill before service.

Details

From our Importer: The late André Iché was one of the first winemakers in the Languedoc to break from the local co-op, purchase his own bottling line, and focus on quality above quantity. By the early 1970s though, he was one of the first vignerons in the area to embrace the notion of going from table wine to an AOC and was one of the pioneers of the Minervois AOC, which started in 1973. André loved the land he accumulated and worked his vines until his doctors told him to stop. Since 2008 the winery has been in the hands of André's daughter Marie-Pierre and winemaker Laurent Battle.

The Carignan vines average 40 years in age, with some of them being up over 100 years old.
