Made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, and aged for 12-18 months in new French Oak, this is a classic Saint-Emilion Bordeaux. It shows very youthful, woody tannins that are delicious now, but only show extreme promise to come. On the palate it is full of cooked strawberries and blackberries, black plum, and green bell pepper, layered with vanilla and clove from the expressive young oak barrels. The wine may be cellared for the next couple decades, or decanted and enjoyed now with lamb burgers.

From the Importer:

At the foot of the hills of Saint Emilion in the village of Saint Hippolyte, Pierre Lafugie was one of the first of his line of descendants during the 19th century to pass on to his descendants the passion of wine making and the love of work well done.

On the hillsides of Castillon, in the village of Saint Genes de Castillon, touching the vineyards of Saint Emilion, the Robin family, originating from a family of wine merchants and a cooper from Libourne since the 18th century has known how to unite traditional and modern ways.

Château Pailhas is the result of know-how, love of the land and of techniques passed on from generation to generation through over two centuries. The plots of vines are located at the foot of the hills, in an appellation with a worldwide reputation for its wines: Saint Emilion.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc
Planted on sand and sandy clay soils, the vines average 35 yr old.

Plot selection and manual sorting of the harvest. Prefermentation maceration was done at a low temperature. Traditional alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation in new barrels. Aging: 12 to 18 months in new French oak.

The nose opens to an elegant woody note accompanied by pleasant notes of red fruits. The taste is fleshy, with woody tannins which give the wine a good length. Concentrated, generous and well balanced, a wine to be kept.
