A true “maverick.”  In 1971, René Rostaing arrived to a Côte Rotie that had lost its luster.  ‘Modern’ winemaking techniques, as employed by his family and colleagues, for efficiency, reduced cost, and ease, had simply stripped Côte Rotie of its character, unique terroir, and reputation. Rostaing set out to change this and revive the importance of his appellation.   Reflecting unique terroir is no easy charge; indeed, restore his family’s great past, he looked, instead, toward the future.  René purchased modern rotating fermentation tanks (usually used to speed up maceration and extract more fruit) but instead slowed the rotation way down and lengthened the process.  The result: a silky, old-school Côte Rotie.  His pivoted back-to-basics approach restored Côte Rotie in prestige and downright unabashed quality. Today’s Rostaing’s wines are regarded as among the very highest quality Syrah, a very paradigm of classic Côte Rotie.  The ripe fruit and long macerations give Rostaing’s wine a full body, with high tannin and a licorice-like spice and generous earthiness.  Additionally, the steep slopes that tower over the Rhone river where the Côte Rotie grapes grow soak up long hours of sun providing unmatched richness.  This is a Côte Rotie of the highest distinction, a wine that will play a role as the centerpiece on any special occasion, and a bottle that looks comfortable in the highest quality cellars for decades ahead of aging and cherishing.
