Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

An Assyrtiko-dominant blend with smaller components of Athiri & Aidani. Grapes are sun-dried for two weeks after manual harvest. Spontaneously fermented in cement. Extremely long and careful aging in a mixture of thoroughly used Russian, French and Austrian oak barrels ranging in size from 300L to 1350L. Approx 300 g/L of RS. Bottled in 2025.
“I tasted this incredible wine from barrel because it has not been officially released. The Estate Argyros 1974 Santorini Vinsanto delivers a surprising level of freshness that comes from the quality of the fruit and from the wine's natural acidity. It's hard to know where to begin and end the descriptors. There are aromas of molasses, caramel toffee, cookie crumble, hazelnut paste and maple syrup. But you also get tart plum and persimmon. Winemaking follows the same protocols used in the estate's Vinsanto Late Release, and therefore the grapes are dried under the sun for two weeks. This is a nearly indestructible wine and a true Santorini beauty.” Wine Advocate: 98 Points
