This wine is made of 78% Teroldego and 22% other grape varietals, likely Schiava, Lagrein, and Malvasia. The wine is born out of Foradori's devastating 2017 Teroldego vintage, when the vineyard was hit with an impossible summer hailstorm. The remaining grapes were unsuitable for normal red wine production, and were blended and lightly macerated to make Lezèr. This rare seasonally-available wine is a must-have for lovers of anything on the grill. Lightly chilled, this annual treasure reflects big terroir-driven flavors in a fun-to-drink bottling that's as light-hearted as it is delicious. A favorite is slow-cooked vegetable chili off a low and slow wood-fired grill or classic marinated flank steak and salsa verde. Do NOT miss it.

Details

Several years ago, long before he went on to *work* a stage at Agricola Foradori, my friend and colleague Jim wrote about this wine in the Summer 2022 Edition of our Print Catalogue. There are updated details about this wine, I'm sure, available as it is preciously allocated and treasured in the markets lucky enough to receive it. Instead of offering that research and repeating those details, I offer, completely, what Jim wrote back then:

"While both our Summer White and our Summer Red were born out of unfortunate circumstances, they stand for the human aspect of handmade wines; in other words, when something goes wrong at a factory or other commercial facility, damaged or flawed goods get thrown away. By contrast, at a family-owned farm and winery, troublesome and destructive weather the winemaker needs to think on her feet and chart a new path…

Above, “Merci” is a one-off cuvee due to devastating frost; here, Foradori’s “Lezer” originally made in 2017, first answered the prayers of the winery after a hailstorm ripped through Foradori’s Trentino vineyards damaging her Teroldego. Though the 2017 harvest could not create the legendary fully extracted reds, Elisabetta created a dark rose/light red style in “Lezer” (translation: “light”) and found long-term success.

Foradori now makes this wine every year, even in the absence of hail! Different local varietals like the ever-refreshing Schiava have been introduced and she now ages the wine in a combination of concrete, amphora, and neutral oak.

Most importantly, however, the wine is exceptionally delicious. There’s a burst of vibrant ripe strawberry, raspberry, and fresh herbs. The wine has wonderful acidity, yet enough structure to give the freshness weight and balance.

Is the wine particularly complex? No. Instead, it is exactly what you want in a warm weather red, and any added nuance from earthiness, texture, or tannin would just get in the way of what is the ultimate summer crusher.
