The Fratelli Alessandria 2022 Barolo Monvigliero is one of the great classic expressions of Verduno, a wine prized for perfume, transparency, finesse and the unmistakable peppery spice of the village. Fratelli Alessandria was the first estate to bottle Monvigliero under its own label, beginning with the 1978 vintage, and the wine remains one of the defining bottlings of the estate. Production today is just 6,000 bottles, making this a particularly special Barolo to seek out for the cellar and the table.

The bouquet is fine-grained and expressive, offering dried currant, pressed violet and the peppery spice so often associated with Verduno. On the palate, the wine is silky and slender, finely knit and glowingly translucent, with lightly etched tannins that never dominate the finish. Fermented with approximately one month of skin contact and then aged for three years in large Slavonian and French oak casks, the wine emphasizes transparency and detail over extraction. As with the best expressions of Monvigliero, the pleasure comes from its aromatic lift, graceful texture and sense of place rather than sheer concentration. The 2022 vintage suits this style particularly well, favoring finesse, freshness and elegance over power.
