Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

This wine is made from equal parts Piedirosso and Aglianico, two heavily pigmented and flavorful indigenous varieties to the southwestern coast of Italy. The grapes are sourced from harrowingly steep vineyards, set on coastal terraces at 550 meters above sea level. Marisa Cuomo is a legendary winemaker, who specializes with her whites, but achieves equal success and great phenolic ripeness with her reds, without making them super bulky. She farms her grapes to the highest quality, and is quite literally a 'vigneta eroica' or heroic farmer. The Furore Rosso, named for the town surrounding the estate, is fermented and aged in used French oak barrels for 6 months. It has lovely dark fruit, smooth fine tannins, and a savory, gamey finish making it a perfect pairing for lightly cooked, but well-seared red meats, tartares, or seared tuna.
