Domaine Brun-Avril Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, 2018
Domaine Brun-Avril Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, 2018
This powerhouse is as deliciously elegant as they come, but goodness is this a satisfying deep dark wine. The Avril family has been in Châteauneuf since the fourteenth century (15 generations and counting). Most of the vineyards were established by Jean Avril, Jean-Jacques' grand-father. Born in 1882, he is the reason they have ancient Grenache vines. The vines are located in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape village in an area called Farguerol. 105-year-old vines ensure serious concentration but do not compromise this wine’s signature garrigue spice. That pleasant bramble is remarkably delicious. The family has been farming organically for years without officially certification. 78% Grenache, 14% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah. 28-day Maceration. Punchy flavors of red and black fruits, smoke, crushed rocks, chewy tannins and bright acid spell flexibility: drink now, lay down, or do both. -JZS
