This wine is made from 100% Orange Traube. We would pair it with freshly grilled bratwurst, topped with sauerkraut and mustard. The grape was discovered in the wild and was traditionally used in the Austrian field blend Gemischter Satz. In 1966 Karl Georg Zahel selected and planted it as a single variety to help it stand out on its own. Orange Traube literally translates to "Orange Grape", but is not to be confused with orange wine - the grapes are certainly orange, but the wine is a white wine. It does, however, share many flavors with orange wine, of yellow peach, apricot, and a slight spicy undertone.

From the winery: Our Orange "T" is an old grape variety that can only be marketed as wine from Austria. In the nose it shows an intense peach and apricot fruit with spicy tones and elegant minerality. The fine, fresh acidity of the wine is well balanced with subtle sweetness, making it a perfect aperitif or ideal accompaniment, especially with a light meal.

Orange grape is a white wine variety that was originally discovered from wild vines in 1840 by the influential German winegrower Johann Phillip Bronner. Since its recognition in August Wilhelm von Babo's "Lexikon der Rebsorten" in 1954, it has increasingly been cultivated in Germany and Austria, but most often as part of a mixed set and less frequently as a single-variety wine. When the skin of the grapes is fully ripe, it takes on a slightly orange tint, hence the name orange grape.

The orange grape has been an important part of the mixed set since the beginning of our winery in 1930, but it was not until 1966 that Karl Georg Zahel selected the variety and replanted it in a single-variety vineyard. He noticed that the orange grape gave his blended set a unique quality and hoped this little-known grape would stand out even more in a wine of his own. Two generations later, Zahel is the only Austrian winery that still produces a varietal wine from 100% orange grapes.
