100% Cabernet Franc. Domaine Lavigne’s L’Inattendue 2023 is a rich, polished expression of Saumur-Champigny, with ripe blackberry, black cherry, cassis, violet, and subtle peppery notes. The palate is generous and concentrated yet fresh, with supple, fine-grained tannins and a distinctly mineral finish reflecting its clay-limestone and stony soils. The cuvée is classified as a wine for aging, and the estate describes it as having exceptional aromatic richness and character; the 2023 was also entered in the Saumur wine competition as a “cuvée de garde.” Pair with roast lamb, grilled steak, duck, roast chicken with herbs, mushroom dishes, or aged goat cheese.

Domaine Lavigne is a family estate based in Varrains, in the heart of Saumur-Champigny, with a focus on Cabernet Franc and the distinctive limestone-rich terroirs surrounding Saumur. The estate produces several cuvées ranging from approachable, fruit-driven bottlings to more serious age-worthy wines such as L’Inattendue. Their wines emphasize the natural combination of Cabernet Franc’s red and black fruit, floral character, freshness, and the mineral influence of the region’s tuffeau limestone and clay soils. L’Inattendue is one of the domaine’s more ambitious cuvées, made to showcase greater richness and depth while retaining the elegance and freshness characteristic of Saumur-Champigny.
