Domaine Tempier 'Lulu & Lucien' Bandol Rouge, 2023 (3L)

Domaine Tempier 'Lulu & Lucien' Bandol Rouge, 2023 (3L)

Regular price $572.00

A properly structured, quintessential Provençal red led by Mourvèdre, offering enticing aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and dark plum, layered with black olive, wild thyme, rosemary, licorice, and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied and concentrated yet elegant, the palate reveals rich dark-fruit flavors, finely textured tannins, and refreshing acidity, with savory notes of garrigue, earthy minerality, and a long, persistent finish. Aged in large oak foudres, this classic Bandol balances Mediterranean warmth with remarkable finesse and structure, making it enjoyable with aeration now but rewarding further cellaring as its complexity develops. Pair with herb-crusted lamb, grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef, game dishes, or a traditional Provençal daube.

Details

Domaine Tempier is one of the most influential and historically significant estates in Provence, located in Le Plan-du-Castellet, near the Mediterranean coast in the Bandol appellation. The estate dates back to at least the 18th century, with the historic family property and its bastide established in 1834. Its modern identity was shaped by the marriage of Lucie “Lulu” Tempier and Lucien Peyraud, who settled at the domaine in 1940 and devoted themselves to restoring its vineyards and elevating the reputation of Bandol wines. Lucien became a pioneering advocate for Mourvèdre, championing the variety as the foundation for serious, age-worthy Provençal reds at a time when the region was better known for rosé. His work helped establish Bandol as an official appellation in 1941 and cemented Mourvèdre’s central role in its identity. Lulu was equally influential, promoting the estate’s wines to restaurants throughout France and becoming renowned for her hospitality and traditional Provençal cooking. Together, they helped transform Domaine Tempier into a benchmark producer whose wines earned international recognition.

Today, Domaine Tempier remains under the stewardship of the Peyraud family, with day-to-day vineyard and cellar management overseen by Daniel Ravier. The estate farms a mosaic of vineyard parcels across Bandol’s sun-drenched hillsides and terraced slopes, where Mediterranean breezes and the cooling Mistral help balance the region’s warmth. Predominantly clay-limestone soils contribute structure and complexity, while the estate’s traditional approach emphasizes careful vineyard work, indigenous-yeast fermentation, and extended maturation in large oak casks known as foudres. The domaine produces several distinctive single-vineyard reds, including La Tourtine, La Migoua, and Cabassaou, alongside its signature Cuvée Lulu & Lucien, renamed in 2020 to honor the couple’s enduring legacy.

The 2023 Lulu & Lucien Bandol Rouge is made primarily from Mourvèdre, approximately 75%, complemented by Grenache and Cinsault, with smaller proportions of Carignan and Syrah. The fruit is sourced from multiple estate terroirs, creating a wine that balances the depth and savory character of Mourvèdre with freshness, aromatic complexity, and refined structure. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, followed by at least 18 months of aging in large oak foudres. Although approachable with decanting in its youth, the wine has the structure to develop beautifully over the next decade and beyond, revealing increasingly complex notes of dried herbs, leather, tobacco, and forest floor.
