Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

This unique wine is a blend of Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah, all from the famed Bussia vineyard of Barolo. Aldo Conterno founded this winery after parting ways with his brother Giovanni, who stayed running the renowned Giacomo Conterno winery. Aldo wanted to experiment with a modern style of Barolo, and using French oak in his other wines. Aldo of course continues to make Barolo from the Bussia vineyard, but all his other red wines are aged in French over traditional Slavonian oak. This wine is a unique experiment with French grapes mixed in with Barolo quality fruit. It sees a shorter maceration than Barolo, at 8 to 10 days, and spends less time aging, in both stainless steel and ultimately French oak vats. The resulting wine is much more dark fruited, but with more fruit and body than many Langhe Rosso wines. It is also pretty and perfumed, and represents a pleasant departure from the norm here in the Langhe. Pair it with roasted duck and fennel over a root vegetable puree.
