The Cristian Boffa 2022 Barolo Capalot is a distinct and deeply personal expression of La Morra, made on a tiny scale by one of the young growers we are particularly excited to follow. Capalot is the name of Boffa's family vineyard in Santa Maria della Morra, a site with long family roots and the kind of old vines and favorable exposures that proved profound in the dry 2022 vintage. There is something particularly compelling about a wine made this way: the vineyard, the grower and the vintage all speaking clearly rather than being obscured by intervention.

This single vineyard 2022 shows a lovely combination of perfume, freshness and fine structure that makes Cristian's wines so exciting with delicious fruit concentration, balance and freshness. The wine has the classic elegance of La Morra, and 'Capalot' carries a depth and personality, with beautifully lifted aromatics, that serve to compliment the 'Comune' bottling with a deeper cut and a more demanding albeit finely woven tannic structure. There is no sense of heaviness or over-extraction. Instead, this wine has the clarity and energy of a carefully made Barolo, revealing more detail and complexity as it opens and gains air.

The combination of perfume, freshness and structure makes it an ideal partner for roast meats, veal, mushrooms, handmade pasta, game and a beautifully prepared steak. At the same time, there is enough refinement to enjoy it simply with good conversation and a generous glass, allowing the wine to unfold slowly over the course of an evening. Capalot has the balance to be delicious in its youth while possessing the structure and depth to become considerably more interesting with time.

Cristian Boffa comes from a family with deep roots in Santa Maria della Morra, and his approach is resolutely hands-on and small scale. His wines are a wonderful example of the old-vine, carefully farmed Barolo that Charlie Leech, Italian Buyer at Berry Bros. & Rudd, emphasized in his discussion of the 2022 vintage. In his Barolo 2022 Vintage Report, Leech points to old vines, favorable exposures and careful, intentional winemaking as essential advantages in a dry year. Boffa's Capalot is exactly the kind of wine that demonstrates what those advantages can produce: a simply lovely Barolo with freshness, character and a genuine sense of place.

The 2022 Capalot is a wine to buy for both immediate pleasure and the cellar. Production is tiny, and wines of this sort from a thoughtful young grower are exactly the bottles we like to discover before everyone else does. Distinctive, elegant and beautifully made, Capalot is a compelling addition to the cellar and a particularly rewarding Barolo to follow as Cristian Boffa's reputation continues to grow.

Details

Cristian Boffa is one of those rare young Barolo producers whose story is as compelling as the wines. Working from the family vineyards in Santa Maria della Morra, Boffa farms roughly five hectares, much of it inherited through his mother's family, including the Capalot, Santa Maria, Galina and Bricco Chiesa parcels. His father, Stefano, spent more than forty years working alongside the legendary Luigi Oddero, while Cristian himself trained under Oddero before establishing his own label. He began bottling independently in tiny quantities, just 500 bottles of Barolo in 2014, and today remains resolutely small scale, working organically and making traditionally styled wines with large-format Slavonian and French oak.

The reaction from the wine trade has been remarkably enthusiastic. Field Blend Selections describes Boffa as a producer with an “absurd winemaking pedigree” whose tiny-production single-vineyard Barolos are thrilling, while another importer describes the wines as fragrant, hauntingly complex and dramatically undervalued. Even more telling, Boffa's wines have attracted praise from Antonio Galloni, who called his 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra “absolutely exquisite” and noted its striking complexity and uncommon depth. FField Blend Selections+1 What makes Boffa particularly exciting is that this is not simply a promising young winemaker. He is the inheritor of old vines, family knowledge and some extraordinary La Morra terroir, now translating those advantages into tiny quantities of beautifully traditional, highly individual Barolo. As one importer put it after tasting with him, Boffa's wines were so convincing that they knew immediately that this was a talent and a group of Barolos that belonged in their portfolio.
