Sunday Night Supper: A Study of Slope
Jacky Blot (RIP 2023) is one of the truly great producers of Loire Valley red wine. Here, a deep(er) dive with a delicious conclusion.

*This is our Annual Barolo Direct Import Offer*
A classic expression of one of Barolo's most celebrated MGA's, a wine of precision, structure and unmistakable site character. Brunate has long been prized for its combination of perfume, mineral tension and firm architecture, and this vintage delivers with a distinctly traditional sensibility. If 'Textbook Delicious' is a term, then this is the paradigm. Approximately 10,000 bottles were produced, making this a serious and compelling addition to the cellar for anyone who appreciates Barolo with structure, pedigree and the capacity to evolve beautifully with time.
The bouquet opens with a dark core of black fruit, dried cherry and blackcurrant, framed by mineral tension, tar and pressed rose. On the palate, the wine is tightly constructed and finely etched, with firm tannins providing the backbone while the fruit carries considerable depth and persistence. The dry growing season of the 2022 vintage is evident in the darker fruit profile and concentrated mid-palate and the wine remains focused and precise rather than heavy. Traditional vinification, including long maceration followed by three years of aging in large Slavonian oak casks, gives the wine the structure and balance to develop gracefully while preserving the classic character of Brunate.
This is the bottle to reach for when you want Barolo with more muscle, the sort of wine that belongs alongside grilled steak, braised beef, game or a rich mushroom dish. Brunate has a unique ability to marry power with detail. There is a lovely concetration of fruit here to enjoy, but the real pleasure is in the interplay between dark fruit, mineral tension, tar, rose and finely grained tannin. This is not a Barolo that needs to shout. Instead, this bottle shows the structure and pedigree to leave a deep impression over the course of an entire evening.
The traditional approach in the cellar is a major part of our appeal for this classic bottle. Long maceration and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks allow the wine to develop without masking the personality of the vineyard with excessive extraction or new oak. The result is a Brunate with both the seriousness of the site and the patience of the old-school Barolo tradition.
This is a wine to enjoy now with decanting and a substantial meal, but, ultimately, this is a wine for the cellar, and there is a reason to give it time. The firm structure, finely etched tannins, dark fruit and traditional élevage should allow it to gain complexity and softness over the years.
