This is Montevertine's flagship wine, made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo. The wine is aged in large Slavonian oak, and comes from grapes planted on a small 2.5 hectare parcel facing south, soaking up plenty of sunlight, and developing wonderful ripe fruit. The Montevertine estate is located just south of Radda in the heart of Chianti Classico. It was once a rural fortress built for the days when mercenaries and crusaders roamed the Tuscan hills, in search of homes to pillage. The estate was revived in 1967, and since has become the wonder it is today.

From our Importer: Inhabited since the 11th century, the hilltop hamlet long served as a rural defensive fortress until it was abandoned and then acquired by Sergio Manetti in 1967 as a vacation home for his family. Planning to make a small amount of wine for family and friends, Signor Manetti planted 2 ha of vineyards and built a small cantina. After rapid success and acclaim Signor Ma- netti decided to devote himself entirely to producing wine at his estate, doing so with vigor until 2000. After Sergio Manetti’s death, Montevertine passed into the hands of his son Martino and Paolo Salvi, protégé of longtime estate oenologist Giulio Gambelli.

The standard bearer of the estate, it is aged 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and is composed of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo (with perhaps a hint of Colorino). The fruit for this bottling comes primarily from a 2.5 hectare parcel of vines planted in 1982 on a south – southeast facing slope.
