A striking expression of 100% Grillo from the Santa Margherita contrada in southeastern Sicily, the 2024 SM offers aromas of citrus peel, white flowers, quince, and crushed stone. The palate is textured yet vibrant, combining ripe orchard fruit with saline minerality, subtle herbal notes, and a gentle phenolic grip from brief skin contact. Fresh acidity carries through a long, savory finish marked by sea-spray salinity and limestone tension. Excellent with grilled Mediterranean seafood, shrimp arancini, crudo, roasted white fish, or Sicilian dishes such as sardines with citrus and herbs. Its combination of texture, freshness, and mineral drive also pairs beautifully with vegetable-forward dishes and light poultry preparations.

Since founding her estate in Vittoria in 2004, Arianna Occhipinti has become one of Sicily’s most influential voices, helping to redefine the region through a commitment to organic farming, native varieties, and a deep focus on terroir. While her wines first gained acclaim for their transparency and elegance, her work has increasingly centered on exploring the nuances of individual vineyard sites and demonstrating the extraordinary diversity of southeastern Sicily’s landscapes.

Best known for her pioneering work with Frappato, Occhipinti has devoted years to studying how different soils, exposures, and microclimates shape the character of the grape. Inspired by the great vineyard traditions of Burgundy and Barolo, her Vini di Contrada project focuses on three neighboring but geologically distinct sites: Bombolieri (BB), Pettineo (PT), and Fossa di Lupo (FL). Each vineyard is farmed and vinified in the same way, allowing the singular qualities of place to emerge clearly in the glass. Together, these wines offer a compelling study of terroir, ranging from the mineral precision and energy of Bombolieri, to the fragrant fruit and graceful texture of Pettineo, to the earthy depth and structure of Fossa di Lupo. The result is a vivid portrait of Frappato and a testament to the remarkable diversity that exists within this small corner of southeastern Sicily.

This same philosophy extends beyond red wines to Occhipinti’s work with white varieties, where she has become an important advocate for single-vineyard expressions of Albanello and Grillo. Through bottlings such as SM, sourced from a historic parcel of over 60-year-old Albanello vines, and Vigna di Pettineo, a site-specific Grillo, she explores the distinct identities of Sicily’s native white grapes with the same rigor she applies to Frappato. These wines highlight subtle differences in soil composition, altitude, and maritime influence, revealing layers of texture, salinity, and aromatic complexity that challenge conventional expectations of Sicilian white wine. Taken together, her contrada reds and single-vineyard whites form a unified vision: wines that speak not only of grape variety, but of the unique places from which they originate.
