Cascina Roccalini Langhe Nebbiolo, 2022

Cascina Roccalini Langhe Nebbiolo, 2022

Regular price $40.00

100% Nebbiolo from 50 year old vines overlooking the town of Alba in Piedmont. Pair it with a juicy and crispy Pork Milanese. Paolo Veglio is a first generation winemaker, and was the only child out of three in his generation who cared about the family farm. When he was young, he apprenticed himself out to local farmers in the area to learn about winemaking, and eventually began his journey. Only 4 hectares out of his 20 total are planted to vines, as he has very much taken an old school, holistic, anti-monoculture approach to the vineyard. The property is full of wild herbs, wheat grasses, trees, flowers and insects. Before beginning his own label Paolo used to sell his fruit to some of the greatest vineyards around, including Gaja and Bruno Giacosa. Paolo uses his youngest vines for this wine, and attributes the freshness of the juice to his low-lying clay soils, which sit near the Tanaro River. Using the traditional steccatura method, Paolo does not have to punch down the wines, and can macerate longer and more slowly, for a true depth of flavor.

Details

From our Importer: Paolo Veglio is a first generation Barbaresco producer. His family worked in many different trades from architects to hazelnut brokers, but farming was not in his blood. His interest in it and winemaking came from growing up looking at the most iconic Barbaresco vineyards from his country house in the middle of hills around Alba and Langhe. In just a short period of time, he’s gone from selling his grapes to some of the most iconic wineries in Piemonte, to becoming one of the appellation's legends. You’d never know it by talking with him though, he maintains a refreshing humility about him.

Paolo farms organically and biodynamically but eschews any formal certifications. He feels certifications represent the commercial side of the wine industry. The most important for Paolo is letting nature work at its own pace, and not hurrying things along with chemicals. His vineyard site sits on a hill overlooking the Tanaro river in the heart of Barbaresco. He owns nearly 40 forested acres behind his vineyards but chooses not to plant them in order to promote biodiversity. He carries his hands off philosophy to the cellar as well, in an effort to achieve the purest expression of Nebbiolo.
