Madson Wines 'Les Nuages' Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, 2025

Madson Wines 'Les Nuages' Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, 2025

Regular price $36.00

100% Pinot Noir. Bright ruby in color, Madson Wines’ 2025 “Les Nuages” opens with lifted aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petal, and forest floor, accented by subtle savory spice and a cool, woodsy character. The palate is bright and finely textured, with juicy red fruit, cranberry, dried herbs, and a mineral edge carried by lively acidity; silky tannins and a gently earthy finish give the wine both elegance and persistence. A cool-climate expression of the Santa Cruz Mountains, shaped by the region’s fog and coastal influence, it is graceful, savory, and refreshing rather than overtly ripe. Food pairings: roast chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherry, wild mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or a simple charcuterie and soft-cheese board.

Details

From the Winemaker: The “Les Nuages” is a blend of our Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir vineyards and pays homage to the clouds that allow our Pinot Noir to ripen slowly and gracefully. The 2025 is sourced from four vineyards that we farm organically or provide consulting for the organic farming. The vineyards in this blend include 16.67% Coyote Ranch (410ft), 16.67% Meadowridge (498ft), 33.33% Branciforte (700ft), 8.33% Chamise (2050ft), 12.5% Crystal Creek (445ft), and 12.5% Toyon (480ft). These vineyards share the Santa Cruz Mountain terroir of intense south-facing slopes, cool ocean air and marginal sandstone topsoil. Yields are low, ranging from 1 ton per acre to 2.5 tons per acre. We cane prune the Pinot Noir and amend soils with organic compost. We manage vine canopies with several passes of shoot thinning on all sites and leaf removal on the morning side of the vine. The 2025 vintage was challenging, and although we had a warm spring and great fruit set, we had a cold, wet harvest season which led to extended ripening times. The hurdle in 2025 was achieving ripeness with the fear of botrytis forming in the wet conditions. Ultimately, we spent extra time sorting our fruit upon harvest and the resulting wines show incredible balance in a cool vintage.

Winemaking: We destemmed Meadowridge and Coyote Ranch Pinot Noir to 50% whole cluster while Toyon, Crystal Creek, Branciforte and Chamise Pinot Noirs fermented 100% whole cluster. The resulting blend is 80% whole cluster. All fermentations occur naturally (without inoculation) in open top tanks. Aged in 10% new French oak barrels for 11 months. We perform one mid-winter racking and one racking before bottling. Enjoy now or cellar 5 - 12 years. 12.7% ABV, 23 barrels produced

Tasting Notes: Floral aromatics of rose petal, blood orange, with a hint of dried thyme. The palate offers flavors of ripe pomegranate, black tea, fresh porcini and a touch of citrus.
