Gamay

Gamay Noir, often referred to simply as Gamay, is a red grape variety primarily associated with the Beaujolais region of France. Whether grown in Beaujolais or in other regions across the globe, Gamay produces light bodied, gamey red wines full of red fruit and spice.

Gamay produces wines known for their vibrant fruitiness, low tannins, and refreshing acidity. Gamay wines typically exhibit flavors of red berries, especially cherry and raspberry, with floral and earthy undertones. Gamay Noir is also cultivated in the United States, particularly in regions like Oregon's Willamette Valley and California's Sierra Foothills. American Gamay wines often exhibit similar characteristics to their French counterparts, with vibrant fruit flavors and refreshing acidity. These wines typically showcase flavors of red cherries, strawberries, and cranberries, with floral and herbal notes adding complexity.

Gamay's vibrant acidity and fruity character make it an excellent companion for a wide range of foods. Its low tannins and refreshing nature make it particularly well-suited to lighter dishes such as roasted chicken, grilled fish, or vegetarian fare like roasted vegetables or pasta primavera. Gamay's bright red fruit flavors, such as cherry and raspberry, complement the flavors of these dishes without overpowering them. Additionally, its versatility extends to heartier fare like charcuterie, where its lively acidity can cut through the richness of cured meats and cheeses.
